Chapter Chat 7: Y5/6, W5 - Tasks & Questions

W5 - Chapters 31-38

TASKS - Choose from the following

1. ART - Draw a picture of Zero and Stanley hiding away under the boat. TWINKL TEMPLATE

Write 5 questions for one of the characters. Interview the character using the Puppet Pals app. TWINKL POWERPOINT with questions.

3. Make a Diorama of the story. It could be any scene in the story so far.

4. RESEARCH - Kissin’ Kate Barlow is a fictional character, but real female outlaws helped make the Old West an even wilder place. Research the notorious Belle Starr, known as “the Bandit Queen”; Cattle Kate; the beautiful Etta Place, who teamed up with Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid; and other famous women outlaws. Present your findings in a poster.

5. HANDS ON - Make your own sploosh! Every summer Miss Katherine would pick bushels of peaches and preserve them in jars with cinnamon, cloves, nutmeg, and other spices. Zero calls the sweet, muddy liquid he finds in jars under the rowboat Sploosh and it helps keep him alive in the desert after he runs away from camp. TWINKL TEMPLATE

Here’s a recipe to help you and an adult re-create Kate Barlow’s prize-winning spiced peaches.

Kissin’ Kate Barlow’s Spiced Peaches

1 can (29 ounces) peach halves, drained (save the syrup in a separate bowl)
2⁄3 cup apple cider vinegar
1 cup light brown sugar, packed 1⁄4 teaspoon salt
8 whole cloves
1 cinnamon stick1⁄4 teaspoon ground nutmeg

In a saucepan, combine 2⁄3 cup of the peach syrup with all the other ingredients except the peaches. Simmer uncovered for 10 minutes.
Pour over peaches. Cool, then cover and chill for at least 24 hours (or 110 years!).
Bring to room temperature and eat. 

6. VOCABULARY TASK - Find the meaning for the following words: Parched p157, Systematic p150, Protruding p165, Increments p167, Precipice p171.  

7. WRITING TASK - Describe the desert in a five senses poem: Tastes, sights, sounds, smells and touch.

8. MINECRAFT TASK - Make a yellow spotted lizard on Minecraft.

7. What does Stanley learn about himself as they climb the mountain? What does he learn about Zero?

8. How did Stanley and Zero stay positive in the desert? How can you stay positive when things go wrong?

9. “Stanley thought only about each step, and not the impossible task that lay before him.” Have you ever attempted anything that seemed impossible? How did you approach it? What did you learn from the experience?

10. What do you think will happen next? Will they make it out of the desert alive?
