W1 - Task and Questions

Hi everyone, here is week 1's reading task and the twitter chat questions. The chat is going to be at 10am, Friday.

Make sure you check out the 'How To Join' page so you are ready for the first chat.

At this stage I have had over 70 classes express interest in joining. It could be a busy chat!

Remember in Week 1 we are reading the first 4 chapters. I can't wait to get into it!

Create Zuckerman’s barn! This could be a picture, model, Lego creation or you could even make it in Minecraft! Remember to make it exactly like the story describes it!

Twitter Chat Questions

1. In the beginning of Charlotte's Web, Fern saves Wilbur from death. Would you have saved Wilbur too? Why?

2. Fern loved looking after Wilbur. What can we infer from this about Fern’s character?

3. Zuckerman’s barn was the kind of barn that children liked to play in. Have you got a favourite place that you like to play in? Describe it.

4. Wilbur broke free but didn’t seem to enjoy it. Why was this? Was freedom important to the animals?

5. Wilbur was lonely and wanted a friend. What does it mean to be a good friend?

6. Who do you think wants to be Wilbur's friend at the end of Chapter 4? What do you think will happen next?

7. To finish can you please share Zuckerman barn creations? Can everyone please leave a comment on someone’s creation.

8. Are you enjoying the book so far? What do you like or dislike about it?

How to write a quality tweet

Here's a poster outlining how to write a quality tweet. It's always a good idea to go over the criteria before taking part in the twitter chat.

First Chapter Book - Charlotte's Web

The first chapter book for Chapter Chat is going to be Charlotte's Web! It's a classic story and it fits nicely for the Y3/4 age group.

I have always wanted to read this book aloud to my class and can't wait to start!

Welcome to Chapter Chat, a Twitter based Book Club for Y3-4 New Zealand kids.

What happens is a chapter book is selected and each week the teacher reads 3/4 chapters aloud to their class.

Also at the start of each week 1 reading activity will be posted about the text for the kids to complete.

From here we will have a twitter chat every Friday morning at 10am to discuss the chapters for that week and share the tasks that have been completed.

The twitter chat works as follows...

- 5-10 questions will be generated about the week's chapters.
- A question will be posted every 5 minutes for the kids to discuss
- Collaboration and commenting will be encouraged
- Children can share their tasks
- I will facilitate the chats

Sound like fun? If you are interested in joining Chapter Chat just send me an email at or send a tweet to @ChapterChat or @PalmyTeacher. I look forward to hearing from you!
